The Kelly family was notoriously known for small theft crimes, particularly of cattle.
Soon after the family began to have a few run in’s with Constable Fitzpatrick. In one of these encounters Fitzpatrick went to the Kelly house to arrest Ned’s brother Dan for stealing horses. Stories say that Fitzpatrick tried to get too friendly with one of Ned’s sisters and ended up wounded by a gunshot.
